WTA Tour is a series of tennis tournaments, regarded as the next best to Grand Slam and WTA Tour Championships. Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is the governing body of the tour. Over the years, WTA tour has undergone some changes in its structure. During its inception back in 1990, a total of five tiers were present, also known as categories. Since 2009 and till 2020, the tiers were classified and fused into Premier tournaments and international tournaments. A major change was brought in 2021, the current format is similar to the ATP Tour. Now, WTA Tour consists of WTA 1000, WTA 500 and WTA 250 tournaments.
The worthiest of the three-tournament series in the WTA Tour, the WTA 1000 consists eight tournaments. Indian Wells Open, Miami Open, Madrid Open and China Open are deemed mandatory. Winner of mandatory tournaments gain 1000 points and non-mandatory tournaments gain 900 points. There are no grass courts in the WTA 1000.
As of 2021, WTA 500 consists of 15 tournaments. Unlike the name suggests and the norm in ATP 500, the winners of WTA 500 gain 470 points, not 500. Hard courts are common in WTA 500, two grass courts exist, one in Germany and another one in the UK.
Familiar as the WTA International tournaments, the reorganized WTA 250 comprises of 43 tournaments conducted all over the world. Belgrade, Budapest, Prague, Birmingham, Melbourne and Auckland are few of the noteworthy tournaments. The winner of each tournament is awarded 280 points.
